Project description
Project Overview
Hertz Engineering Limited conducted a Low Voltage Arc Flash Study and Analysis for Newmont Ghana Limited, aimed at enhancing workplace safety, minimizing electrical hazards, and ensuring compliance with NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and IEC 60909 standards. This study was crucial in identifying potential arc flash risks and implementing appropriate mitigation strategies to protect personnel and equipment.
Scope of Work
1. Data Collection & System Modeling
- Conducted a comprehensive site assessment to gather data on electrical panels, switchgear, transformers, and circuit breakers.
- Developed a one-line diagram for accurate network representation.
- Utilized advanced power system analysis software to model Newmont’s electrical distribution system.
2. Arc Flash Hazard Analysis
- Performed incident energy calculations to determine the arc flash hazard levels at key points.
- Identified arc flash boundary distances to define safe working zones.
- Evaluated the available fault current and its impact on system protection.
3. Protection Coordination & Risk Mitigation
- Reviewed relay settings, circuit breaker trip times, and fuse characteristics to minimize arc flash risks.
- Recommended protective device adjustments to optimize system protection.
- Proposed engineering and procedural controls such as remote operation, arc-resistant switchgear, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
4. Safety Compliance & Reporting
- Provided detailed arc flash labels with calculated incident energy values for equipment identification.
- Developed a customized arc flash risk assessment report outlining potential hazards and mitigation strategies.
- Trained personnel on arc flash awareness, PPE selection, and safe working practices.
Challenges and Solutions
- High-Fault Energy Levels: Implemented selective protection grading to reduce fault clearing times and lower incident energy.
- Complex Electrical Network: Utilized advanced simulation tools to accurately assess multiple fault scenarios.
- Compliance with International Standards: Ensured adherence to Newmont’s safety policies and global electrical safety standards.
Outcome and Impact
- Enhanced Workplace Safety: Reduced the risk of arc flash incidents, protecting personnel from severe burns, equipment damage, and operational downtime.
- Improved System Protection: Optimized protective device coordination for efficient fault isolation.
- Regulatory Compliance: Met national and international electrical safety requirements, ensuring audit readiness.
